How are the Stem Cells stored?

The stem cells are separated into two cassettes for storage, so that there are potentially two opportunities for use of the cells. The Stem Cells are put into cryogenic storage, which is the process of putting them into a state of ‘suspended animation’, and keeping them in the vapour stage of liquid nitrogen. Initially they are put into a controlled freezer where the temperature is lowered gradually to prevent damage to the cells. They are then transferred to the storage freezer where they are kept
at -170ºC.

How long are the Stem Cells stored for?

Umbilical Cord Stem Cells have successfully been stored for 15 years, and other Stem Cells have been stored for longer. Scientists believe that potentially Umbilical Cord Stem Cells can be kept in cryogenic storage indefinitely.

How can I get access to the Stem Cells if they are needed?

The stem cells must be requested by a medical practitioner. The stem cells are given a unique identification number so that the they are easily retrieved.

How long has CellSense been collecting Cord Blood in Australia?

Cellsense has been in operation for nearly 3 years and has about 1500 Cord Blood Stem Cell Collections stored.

What happens if there is a power cut at the laboratory?

This is not a problem because the freezers can work for 7 days without mains power due to a battery system. However if the power should fail there is an alarm system which as well as alarming in the laboratory, sends an alarm to a pager, which is carried by laboratory staff 24 hours a day. Therefore any power cut is dealt with as soon as possible.

What happens to the Stem Cells if Cellsense goes out of business?

Cellsense is owned by Alexanders Securities, which is a publicly listed company, and therefore Cellsense has all of the statutory protection afforded to it through Australian company law.

As well as this we have a partnership with Sydney Advenstist Hospital, where the cord blood is processed and the stem cells are stored. A long term storage agreement and forward storage payment will mean that these stem cells will be safe.
